Our church is reading through the whole Bible during this year and we’re continuously encouraged to allow the Spirit of God to speak to us as we go through this journey together. Recently a verse stuck out and so I decided to write something on it. The verse is Romans 13:14, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.”
For this specific post I want to just highlight the first part of this verse, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Earlier in this same paragraph, Paul says to put “lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the Armor of Light.” I made a joke to my wife when we read this that Jesus is the style that never goes out of fashion.
This part of the verse is a positive, “put on”. We are encouraged that we can take hold of the Light of Christ and put it on. We might live in a fallen world, darkened by sin, but we don’t have to fit in.
We’re not told to put on the culture we live in or what’s relevant. We’re not told to wear skinny jeans, hats, denim, skirts, suits or what may have you. We’re told to put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Wear Him around in style. His light that draws people out of darkness. His light that gives warmth to those left out in the cold.
The Bible also says in Isaiah 61:10, “I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.”
When we put on the Lord Jesus Christ we are putting on garments of salvation. There is a parable that Jesus tells about a wedding banquet. There is a guy at the banquet that doesn’t have wedding clothes on and he gets kicked out of the banquet. If we are going to spend eternity with God we must put on the garments of salvation and a robe of righteousness, put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
These clothes must be expensive, right? I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t be able to afford these clothes. I usually shop at the discount racks. But thank God for the Good News, the price has already been paid. Jesus Christ Himself has already purchased them for us and has freely offered them for anyone who would take them.
Scripture says that “God has clothed me” and that “He has wrapped me” in these clothes.
Be the light in this world of darkness. Be clothed with salvation and righteousness. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.
